Children's tour "Leni and the Flying Travelers"
Location: Albufereta Natural Park / Port de Pollença
Duration: approx. 4 hours
Age: 6–12 years
Number of participants: optimal 6–15 children plus accompanying person
Season: Spring, summer or autumn (migratory bird season!)

Tour itinerary
1. Start & Introduction (30 min)
Meeting point: Parking at the Albufereta Natural Park
Welcome by guide / nature educator as “Guardian of the Skies”
Each child receives a “bird researcher passport” with tasks (observing, taking notes, drawing)
Introduction:

  • Why do birds come to Mallorca?
  • How do they find their way across the sea?

Child-friendly clarification of terms:

  • What is a migratory bird?
  • What is a salt marsh?
  • What makes the sea salty?

2. Hike on the nature trail (approx. 60–75 min)

  • Stations along the way: Viewpoints with binoculars (child-friendly models also available)
  • Lagoons with saltwater zones and information boards
  • Observation: Flamingos (in winter/spring), herons, stilts, cormorants

Activities on the go:

  • Bird Shadow Guessing: "Who's flying there?"
  • Recognizing footprints in the mud

Answer questions in the researcher’s passport:

  • “What do these birds do all day?”
  • “What happens when the water evaporates?”
  • “What happens to salt when it rains?”

3. Picnic & Bird Game (30 min)

  • Location: Rest area with a view
  • Quiet break with provisions brought along
  • Nature guessing game: “To fly or not to fly?” – Children imitate animals (cormorant, duck, crab…)
  • Painting: My favorite bird – or a fantasy bird with a pirate hat

4. Return with experiment & conclusion (45 min)

  • Short return journey with a game: “I see something you don’t see – and it’s flying!”
  • Mini experiment on the water:
Children dissolve sea salt in cups of water – later let it evaporate to create their own “salt field”

Final questions:

  • Why was salt once a treasure?
  • Why aren't we allowed to feed animals?
  • How do birds navigate without a compass?

In conclusion:

  • Awarding of the “Air Pirate Certificate”
  • Group call: “Ahoy! For birds, wind, and water!”

Child-friendly learning objectives:

  • Migratory birds and their flight routes
  • Ocean currents & weather
  • Salt as a raw material – how people and nature live from it Observe, act respectfully in the natural environment
